Medical Equipment
Biobed
The biobed is the standard diagnostic facility available in a sickbay. Examinations, surgeries, and other medical procedures are all performed on biobeds.
Biobed types
Surgical
The primary biobed in sickbay is designed for surgical purposes, although it is also the default bed for examinations conducted by the chief medical officer. It has various hookups for surgical equipment, and is typically covered by a large sensor cluster. Surgical beds usually have a large display for vital signs and other information adjacent to the bed. Serious surgeries usually require a larger biobed with more specialized sensors and surgical equipment. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II", "Ethics")
Intensive care
Other biobeds line the perimeter of sickbay. These beds are generally used for patients under intensive care or in recovery. Information on a patients' medical status is typically displayed on a biofunction monitor at the head of the bed.
Stasis units
A biobed can be modified for stasis purposes. A patient too critically injured for a starship crew to care for at present can be placed in suspended animation. They can be revived once help arrives or a crisis situation is resolved. (TNG: "Genesis") Stasis beds can be used for other purposes as well, such as supporting a holographic chamber or a biotemporal chamber. (VOY: "Phage", "Before and After")
OB/GYN
Another type of biobed is designed for OB/GYN purposes. It is reclined and styled like a chair. It is generally used for deliveries. (TNG: "The Child") Not all starships have this type of bed available, however. The USS Voyager used a standard biobed for the two children born aboard that vessel. (VOY: "Deadlock", "Endgame")

Hypospray
The Hypospray is a simple and effective method of delivering substances intravenously to a patient. The device consists of a spray head which can deliver drugs painlessly through the skin, and even through clothing. Attached to this is a swappable vial which contains the drugs to be delivered. The Hypospray has several major advantages over the syringe; since the skin is not broken by the spray, there is no contamination of the hyposprays tip during an injection. The device can therefore be used repeatedly without any need for sterilization of the tip. The hypospray is also completely painless, which has helped to make the widespread fear of injections a thing of the past.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Isotropic Restraint
Medical force field used to hold a patient totally immobile.
When Neelix's lungs were removed by a Vidiian in 2371, the Doctor used an isotropic restraint to implement holographic lungs in Neelix's body. The restraint prevented him from moving, so that the lungs could stay aligned in his body. (VOY: "Phage")
In 2372, a mutated Tom Paris was placed under an isotropic restraint while his DNA was restructured with bursts of antiproton radiation. This procedure involved the restraint to be connected to the warp engines in order to receive the radiation. However, Paris was able to break the restraint and escape. (VOY: "Threshold")

Medical Kit
Medical supply modules stored in bulk aboard Federation starships for emergency relief missions. (Also known as Medkits)
Medkits are pouches used by Starfleet medical practitioners and officers that contain medical equipment for away teams.
Two Starfleet medikits: standard and compact. In the 2260s a medkit was carried separately from the medical tricorder as a supplement. It contained a hypospray preloaded with up to six drugs in suspension, such as cordrazine, Masiform-D, a neural paralyzer, sterilite, melanex, and tri-ox compound. Also included was a spray applicator, a medical scanner, and a palm-sized reader tube.
In the 2370s, the kits were more complex, containing a medical tricorder, a hypospray, a dermal regenerator and trauma kit for emergency medical situations.
They are often kept in strategic positions around Starfleet vessels and bases. The USS Voyager had one located behind the tactical console on the bridge. (VOY: "Projections")
A more compact medkit was also employed by Starfleet. It was about the same height as a standard medkit, but not as wide. (VOY: "The Gift")
The USS Enterprise-D kept extra medkits on hand for relief missions. To prove her loyalty to the Maquis, Ro Laren stole a large quantity of them in 2370. (TNG: "Preemptive Strike")

Surgical Support Frame
The surgical support frame, also known as the "clamshell", is a commonly used medical device on board Federation starships present in the 23rd century and afterward. The frame is equipped with a steri-field, cardiostimulator and other support functions for surgical procedures. (TOS: "Journey to Babel"; TNG: "Ethics")
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Biofunction Monitor
The biofunction monitor is a small display located at the head of some biobeds. It gives continually updated information on patient vital signs, such as pulse, respiration, temperature, and brain activity. They have been a staple of starship sickbays since the NX class.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Medical Tricorder
The standard medical tricorder consists of two components: the medical tricorder and medical tricorder peripheral.
The tricorder serves much like a normal tricorder with an expanded medical database containing information on nearly all humanoid life forms and several hundred DNA-based non-humanioids. The MT can diagnose diseases through an artifically intelligent subprocessor and can suggest courses of treatment. The default POOL setting is either SHIPBOARD, or the nearest medical database for tricorder downloading.
The medical Peripheral serves as a complicated sensing device that provides limited real-time viewing of anatomy as the biobed. Further spectrographic information is also provided by the MP in its function as a portable sensor. The MP detaches from the MT housing and is handheld and moved over parts of the patient anatomy. The MP will pulse with the standard heartbeat and vital sign readings are displayed on the upper surface of the MP housing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Neural Monitor
A neural monitor is a medical device that monitors nervous system activity.
In 2377, the con artist Gar offered to sell Administrator Chellick of Dinaali Hospital Ship 4-2 the Doctor's mobile emitter, which he had stolen from the USS Voyager. Chellick at first took it for a neural monitor, and replied that they had no need for more. (VOY: "Critical Care")

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Neurocortical Monitor
A neurocortical monitor is a device used to record a complete encephelographic profile. It is placed on the parietal bone and can be programmed to send an alert to sickbay if it detects any unusual neurological activity.
In 2373, The Doctor had Lieutenant Commander Tuvok wear a neurocortical monitor in order to record a complete encephelographic profile if he had another episode related to his mental breakdown. (VOY: "Flashback")
Later that year, Ensign Vorik wore a cortical monitor while The Doctor was trying to treat his pon farr. (VOY: "Blood Fever")
In 2377, after Seven of Nine began having disconcerting dreams about Unimatrix Zero, The Doctor gave her a cortical monitor to track her REM cycles. (VOY: "Unimatrix Zero")
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Autosuture
The autosuture was a medical device, descended from the 20th century suture, that was used as early as the 22nd century. By the late 24th century this technology was laser-based. (VOY: "The Cloud")
The function of the autosuture is to seal closed and promote the healing of wounds from surgery or deep trauma by stimulating the patient's own anabolism. It is used where the dermal regenerator is inadequate.
Doctor Phlox used an autosuture during his operation on Porthos in 2152. It was used to secure the placement of the pituitary gland he transplanted from a Calrissian chameleon. (ENT: "A Night in Sickbay") Shortly thereafter, he traded his autosuture, among other things, for deuterium. (ENT: "Marauders")
Dr. Beverly Crusher used an autosuture to treat Captain Jean-Luc Picard after he was stabbed in the chest by Jono. (TNG: "Suddenly Human")
Dr. Julian Bashir used an autosuture to repair an injury to Martok's shoulder during a training exercise with Worf. While the repair was general, had the wound been three centimeters to the right, Martok's brachial artery would have been severed, causing much greater damage than an autosuture could repair. (DS9: "Soldiers of the Empire")

Cellular Microsutures
Cellular microsutures are used to stitch internal organs.
After operating on him in 2374, Doctor Bashir told Keevan that he was being held together by cellular microsutures and hope.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emergency Surgical Kit
The emergency surgical kit was a supplemental field kit in the 2260s, used when the medical tricorder and medkit's contents were inadequate for the treatment of major trauma. It presumably contained laser scalpels, protoplasers, and additional medications for sterilization, anesthesia, and pain relief.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laser Scalpel
The laser scalpel is a specialized medical instrument used for creating incisions in various tissues. It uses a finely-tuned laser beam to make cuts. This device was available in different wavelengths for varied cutting strength and depth.
The laser scalpel was the term used from the 2260s, until the 2370s, when it was replaced by the exoscalpel. (TNG: "Ethics")
Captain Janeway used a laser scalpel to extract a Borg cortical node. Later she used one to force a group of alien salvagers to stand down their weapons. (VOY: "Imperfection")
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Protoplaser
A protoplaser is a medical device used in wound treatment. Anabolic protoplasers are a specialized version of a protoplaser.
Personnel file information about Lois Eckridge, an emergency medical assistant, listed her certification to use a protoplaser. (TNG: "Eye of the Beholder")
In a delusion created by Commander William T. Riker's mind while he was held captive on Tilonus IV, Doctor Beverly Crusher ordered for an anabolic protoplaser to be used in the treatment of a crewmember who had been injured by an exploding plasma torch. (TNG: "Frame of Mind")
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dermal Regenerator
The dermal regenerator is used to repair damage to the skin of the patient, including bruising and lacerations. The device is handheld; the doctor holds it over the damaged area and moves it slowly back and forth. The treatment typically lasts only a matter of a few seconds.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Osteogenic Stimulator
Medical device. Used to accelerate healing of bone fractures.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Osteo-Regenerator
An osteo-regenerator is a medical device used to regenerate bone which is damaged.
In 2373, Kes was advised by The Doctor to use an osteo-regenerator on Zahir, incidentally after being attacked by the malfunctioning doctor. (VOY: "Darkling")
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cytoplasmic Stimulator
Medical Instrument. (Seen used to stabilize cellular toxicity levels in a patient)
A cytoplasmic stimulator is a medical device that stimulates the production of cytoplasm in body cells.
When Neelix's lungs were removed by the Vidiians in 2371, his cellular toxicity levels rose and a cytoplasmic stimulator was used to lower them. (VOY: "Phage")
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dermal Stimulator
The dermal stimulator is a Starfleet medical instrument used in cosmetic facial alterations.
In 2371, the Doctor used a dermal stimulator when he was disguising Commander Chakotay as a Vidiian. (VOY: "Faces")
