HISTORY
The newest addition to the Starfleet fighter production program, the Valkyrie Class has replaced the aging Peregrine Class fighters previously used throughout the fleet. Smaller and more agile, Valkyrie Class ships will be used for a variety of missions, from planetary assault to spacecraft interdiction. Unlike the Peregrine Class, the Valkyrie Class is intended to be used in small groups.  The initial shipment of Valkyries was assigned to the USS Typhon for shakedown in 2376 after the Dominion War and the Valkyrie Squadron, as they were designated, were later heavily involved in the Titan system incident.

The basic Valkyrie space frame, itself is an extensive rework of the Talon-Class Federation mission scout ship, and was named for the Norse mythological warrior women.

While Starfleet had utilized small Starfighters before, all were modified shuttlecraft or other small utility vehicles, preferring to utilize existing designs and technologies rather than develop Space Fighter specific craft.

The Valkyrie is a sharp departure in this line of thinking, but still based on existing technology. Utilizing the Impulse Engine Configuration, Computer Core, and Modular frame upon which the Danube Class was built, the Advanced Starship Design Bureau of Utopia Planitia lifted those components exactly and integrated them into the Valkyrie Space Frame.

The Valkyrie Class has a crew of 2, a pilot and an operations/weapons officer one forward port and one aft starboard of the cockpit.  Directly Aft of the Pilots compartment are the Impulse Engines, Computer Core, Micro-Torpedo magazines, Primary and Emergency Fusion Generators, Primary Phaser Generators, the Shield Generators and other necessary systems. Like the Danube the design is modular. The off the line design incorporates a standard LCARS interface, and can at the pilot's discretion  can be replaced with flight controls to resemble those of 20th century aircraft.

The fighter is armed with dual mounted Type 10 phasers, a Type 9 compression in the nose, and also carried 10 Photon and 10 Quantum torpedoes.  To increase combat effectiveness against capital vessels, the Valkyrie Class can also mount 4 Mark XXV Photon Torpedoes outboard along the bottom of the craft.
